Historically, clowns and their garish clown ostumes and make up have been known to appear in theatrical farces and mimes of ancient Greece and Rome but they were predominantly used as fill-ins between acts of the more serious performances.

However, the best known clowns which were actually known as harlequins who wore masks date back to the Middle Ages and the Italian commedia dell’arte. The full clown costumes which we are familiar with today were developed in England and Germany in the 18th century and those included odd shaped hats, oversized shoes, colorful clothing and huge neck ruffles.
